Matt Wilkinson

Matt Wilkinson

Born: September 7, 1988

Born Where: Long Beach, CA

Current Residence: Ventura, CA.

Height: 5-11

Weight: 150

Stance: Goofy
Accomplishments: Best Male Performace in a Video and Video of the Year for "First Chapter" at the 2006 Surfer Poll Awards. Named Next Big Thing by Australia Surfing Life Magazine, 2006, 2004. Most Radical Maneuver Award, California Cup (2004).

Rider:

Stare into the big bowl of hot young Australian surfing talent currently on the table and you'll soon find yourself pointing in Matty's direction mumbling, 'mmm... yes... he's one of the best young guns for sure'.

See, Matt Wilkinson is good. How good? Well, the Long Beach goofy-footer just pushed Rip Curl team mate and former World Junior Champion Ben Dunn to the death in the battle for the 2005 Australian Pro Junior Series Title.

Although Dunny finished atop the ratings come season end, Matt sat in first place at one point in the season and convincingly finished second overall. Not bad for his first serious attempt at the heavily contested series.

Season 2005 was made extra memorable for Wilko when he was given a Sponsor Wildcard into the Rip Curl Search WCT at Reunion Island in June.

Paddling out in Round 1 of the Search WCT - his first ever World Championship Tour event - was a nerve-racking thing for Wilko, especially when you consider that the youngster had to face then six-time world champion Kelly Slater.

The 2004 Under 16 ISA World Junior Champion put up a good fight, but fell short of posting enough points to beat Kelly and advance.

In his second-chance Round 2 heat, Matt came up against Australian Joel Parkinson for a spot in Round 3. Like Slater in the heat before, Parko proved a little too strong for his less experienced competitor.

Results aside, just having the opportunity to surf with and against the world's premiere surfers is sure to be invaluable for him.

There will be more opportunities like this for Wilko in the coming years, because we're focused on helping him take on the Pro Junior Series, tackle the World Qualifying Series and then compete the WCT at his ultimate level.

Born Where: Laguna Beach, CA

Current Residence: Laguna Beach, CA

Height: 5-7

Weight: 159 pounds

Stance: Regular

Sponsors: Volcom and FCS

About Mike:

2007 has been a whirlwind of promotional shoots and dizzying competitive highlights for this 24 year-old Sunshine Coast surfer. Solid pro junior performances, including a win and the event's only perfect 10 point ride in the inaugural international Pro Junior at Bali's infamous 'Keramas', sit against a backdrop of virtual non-stop sojourns for the highly anticipated Young Guns 3 project. Mike has nailed incredible performances in places as far flung as Laguna Beach, Grajagan Indonesia, West Australia and East Coast Australia within the past few months, making his section one of the most explosive. Plus, his amazing repertoire, showcased alongside the freakish talents of stable mates such as Kelly Slater and Dane Reynolds, proves once and for all, this young Aussie has well and truly “arrived”on the international scene. 2006 will be remembered as the year Julian first stepped into the spotlight. At the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships held at Maresias, Brazil in early May, he did what everyone knew he was capable of, he bagged a world title. 2006 also saw Julian step onto the winner's podium at numerous junior events closer to home and be in the hunt for the prestigious Australasian junior crown. His ascension from fledgling grom, to hot-rat junior, to where he now stands, ready to take the next step into the big leagues looks complete. Julian's past is dotted with numerous state, national and international podium finishes, and a stack of video parts, most notably (and enviably) his sojourn aboard the flash Indies III alongside Kelly Slater, and fellow Young Guns Ry Craike, Dane Reynolds and Clay Marzo in the Mentawai Islands. And now, his solid video part in YG3. Morrissey has also surfed in front of 25,000 people in the strangest of places, the Sunway Lagoon wavepool in the land-locked city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he was whipped into two-to-three foot man-made waves by a jet-ski.

Mark Healey

Mark Healey

Mark Healey is crazier than he looks. On the surface, he’s just your wholesome all American looking guy ...who happens to ride really, really big waves. (And if you’ve seen that Surfline video, you know his mere survival is almost as impressive as his surfing.) But that’s not the half of it.

Healey is immune to fear. He free dives as a hobby. He spearfishes every night for his dinner. Sharks? Prey, not predator. He is the kind of guy who needs no dare; he’ll take the path never-before-traveled every time, whether it’s the biggest wave you’d never tow into or the sheer rock cliff that looks like the fastest way to get back to his truck from the beach.
The way Healey puts it, if you’re gonna be dumb, you better be tough. And it’s exactly this combination of tenacity and fearlessness that makes him one of the world’s most electrifying big wave riders. Growing up on the North Shore gave Healey the chance to learn the intricacies of the island’s most infamous breaks, both above and below the surface. His comfort level at Pipe, Waimea and Sunset means he’s not afraid to experiment. And when he charges even bigger waves elsewhere—Jaws, Todos, Teahupoo, Puerto, Tasmania, Cortes Bank—his expertise as a waterman serves him well. He can stay in the moment and in control no matter how big it gets, a reflection of a lifetime spent learning how.

Being crazy gets you noticed, and that’s certainly the case for Healey. In addition to regular props from the holy trinity of surf media—Surfer, Surfing and Transworld— mainstream adrenaline pubs like Outside and Men’s Journal have made Healey’s swell- chasing lifestyle and poster boy abs the envy of Joe Average everywhere. Ever in training for the next wave, the devoted Quik rider has also been tapped to front the brand’s new performance apparel line, EQPT.

Some have deemed Healey the next Laird Hamilton, but a better comparison might be Healey’s favorite movie star, Steve McQueen: a guy who lived hard and liked to go fast.

But really, Healey defies comparison. This Pipeline aficionado is driven but humble, reckless but smart: a guy who laughs in the face of danger as much as his own folly.
